Sustainable Green Tourism

Sustainable tourism arethe environmental friendly travels to the relatively undisturbed natural areas with their main attractions being flora and fauna and cultural heritage.Green tourism minimises the environmental impact of tourism and maximises its adaptation to climate change.

A decision for travelling to green destinations means favouring the active and socioeconomically beneficial involvement of local communities, i.e. supporting local restaurants and hotels, local crafts and its production, development of services offered by local people.

Originally, in business world the term “GREEN” was associated with environmental aspects, but today it embraces all aspects of sustainable development based on the following main principles (UNWTO):

  • Environmental Protection‒ Minimize air-, water- and soil pollution and quantity of waste produced by tourist service providers and visitors. Maintenance of quality and unique characteristics of landscape, protection of natural areas, habitats, wild plants and animals.
  • Social Development ‒ Maintenance and progress of quality of life in local communities, respect for- and support of cultural heritage, tradition and diversity of the destination.
  • Economic Prosperity ‒ Security of competitiveness and viability of tourist destination and local companies. Integrate economic andecological concerns by conserving natural areas which,in turn, generate increased revenues from tourism for future.
  • Minimization of the Impact on Climate ‒ In the last years the climate aspect has become very important. The goal is to minimize the impact of tourism on climate and maximize its adaptation to climate change.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) ‒The responsibility of enterprises for their impacts on society.  To fully meet their social responsibility, enterprises “should incorporate a process to integrate social, environmental, ethical human rights and consumer concerns into their business operations and core strategy.
