Children and Nature

Let children be free. Let’s take them outdoors and (re)connect them with nature!

Touch of the sun, smell of the forest and a meadow, coldness of the snow and transparency of the haze … Warble of the birds, iridescence of the butterflies, colours of the autumn leaves and chestnuts … Snowdrops and primroses … And mountain peaks covered with snow … There are so many faces of nature … Let’s embrace it and respect it … Let’s take our children there, let’s take them outdoors!

Who are children? What are they like? They are full of energy, playful and impulsive. They do not listen, they do not know for discipline, they are not reliable. They are also daring, curious and lost in their dreams. Of course, they want to be free, they feel the need to experience life around them, and let us not forget ‒ they are unpredictable. But above all, they are completely open to love. Subconsciously they give love and they need it even more in return. If they do not get it, they feel this very intensely, they are hurt and disappointed. Let’s give them love, let’s give them freedom, let’s take them to a meadow full of flowers, to a hill covered with snow, let’s take them under tree crowns … For children, time spent in nature is priceless. This is also true for adults. Scientists explain this phenomenon saying we carry it in our genes. They say that the attraction to other people and other living beings is innate in human beings, it is a sort of biological basis, people need to connect with nature and to benefit from the positive affect that nature has on humans. The origin of this explanation is to be found in the fact that 99 % of the human history people were very closely connected to nature.

The culture of new capitalism has bad influence on children, especially on their psychical development ‒ hyper technical development and power of electronic media claim loss of reality and consequently, make us to live in a virtual world. The connection with nature has been broken, we have lost the awareness of nature as a precious value. A frenzied lifestyle makes overworked parents lose sight of that fact and since they do not recognize it anymore they cannot act “properly”. Nature is the solution, let’s trust it and listen to it.

Not so long ago children spent most of their time outdoors, they climbed up the trees, they made things out of wood, they slid down the runways, they smelled flowers, they observed the water running in the nearby stream … If they wanted to ski, they had to walk to the nearby hill, made a ski slope and‒ “one could only dream about a ski-lift!” ‒ put the skiing boots on and skis on their shoulder and walked up and then skied downhill … skis on the shoulder and up again and again downhill and again … until they were tired to death, hardly came back home, got to bed where they fell asleep as angels. By exploring nature children felt freedom, they let loose their fantasy, developed basic movement skills and of course, socialized with friends. Nowadays children hardly know nature, especially children living in cities lack its magic. When outdoors, they can only spend time on different playground equipment which is far too specialized and leaves very little space for children’s creativity. On the other hand, playing in nature which was not created by adults, leaves an open space to their creativity. Natural things that do not have specialized functions can be used in a million ways, for example sticks, stones, tree leaves, sand …

Another thing to worry about is that today children hardly know where their food comes from. They do not really know what vegetables, potatoes etc. are, that they grow on fields, that there are farmers’ hard work and knowledge needed in order for us to get our food. Nowadays children “meet” fruit and vegetables in the supermarkets. Not to mention herbs, apiculture, flora and fauna in general and their importance for our health and wellbeing. It is true that natural science has always been a part of educational programs in schools and kindergartens, but theory is one thing, being able to experience it on your own is something completely different. How can you say that you understand something what you have never seen with your own eyes, felt it or smelled it, touched it or tasted it?

It is our duty as parents to reconnect our children with nature. We are the ones who can encourage our children’s interest for nature. Take your children for a walk in the intact nature, explore the nearby meadow with them, make a garden outside your house, talk to them about plants and animals, play at hide-and-seek among big trees … Make them go out in different weather conditions, at different day times enabling them to recognize different natural cycles. There is not a single moment in nature that could be repeated … A little cloud comes and covers the sun, a spider comes out of nowhere, a twig brakes, a leaf falls down … It is a proven fact that warm feeling that people get in nature, helps them to remember things easier, to get new ideas, to develop their creativity and it stimulates more creative search for different problem solutions. Moreover, nature develops fantasy and encourages the awe and the amazement typical for children that later in life becomes the engine of eagerness to learn about everything around them.
