Ruševec - Family Vacation Pohorje

Ecological Centre and Composting

In the Ecological Centre Ruševec we all dispose waste produced during our stay in the Green Village Ruševec. We separate package, mix waste, paper and glass according to the rules and regulations. But our aim is also to raise awareness about waste sorting and its effects on nature.

Compost pile is a part of the Permaculture Circle Ruševec. Compost is the best supplement we can give to our »garden« soil, i. e. raised garden beds. Composting means imitating natural processes. Nobody fertilizes woods and meadows, but they live just fine. These are areas where natural process of putrefaction takes place ‒ nature turns all organic substances back into manure. Compost is the most natural way to give back to the garden soil what has been taken from nature by harvesting. The following is put on the compost:

  • All organic waste;
  • Lawn and twigs;
  • Withered leaves and flowers;
  • Leaves;
  • Straws, fern;
  • Caper, cardboard;
  • Chicken plumage, dead animals and animal remains;
  • Wool and cotton waste (100 % wool or cotton);
  • Bone meal;
  • Horn;
  • Sawdust, wood-wool (small amounts);
  • Soot (produced by burning of wood);
  • Ashes.

Compost pile consists of two parts, there are holes between the frame boards in order for the air to flow through. We also made a composte covering. The first part contains different waste, wheras the second part is made of different layers: first we put twigs that have a drainage and air flow function. On the twigs we put 25 cm layer of stirred waste from the first part that can be covered with stable manure. We make the layers until all the organic waste from the first part is used up. The compost should not be squeezed, but it should always be moist. If needed, we water it with rainwater or diluted liquid manure made of comfrey and nettle.

Temperature in the compost centre can raise up to 60 °C. Compost earthworms produce rich humus. The pile gets lower and it is ready for use only when we find earthworms in it. That is why we add layers constantly. Process carried out in the compost is called putrefaction.
