Ruševec - Family Vacation Pohorje

Beginning of Permaculture

The term “permaculture” was compounded in the middle of 1970s by Australians Dr. Bill Mollison and David Holmgren. They blended it out of permanent agriculture and permanent culture because they wanted to create a stable agricultural system. That was their answer to the rapidly growing destructive industrial agricultural method that poisoned the soil and water, produced soil erosion and devastated once fertile land.

At the beginning permaculture was a method of sustainable agriculture, but with time it has spread into other areas of human life, for ex.: ecosystem construction, residence construction, power supply, economy and human relations. Permaculture connects: architecture and biology; farming and forestry; forestry and animal husbandry.

A planned approach called permaculture was first presented to public in 1978 in the book Permaculture One. Mollison and Holmgren had constantly improved and developed ideas and had planned hundreds of permaculture areas. They wrote more detailed books about their researches and work. At the beginning of the 1980s, a holistic model was developed out of previous agricultural system. They created a system of sustainable human habitat. Permaculture spread from Australia all over the world and became an international movement. Patrick Whitefield, an English permaculture teacher and the author of books The Earth Care Manual and Permaculture in a Nutshell believes there are two standpoints of permaculture:

a) Original ‒ aims to imitate nature as truly as possible when developing an ecosystem resembling its wild counterpart.

b) Planned ‒ uses relations from the natural ecosystem to construct a garden. The garden does not look naturally like the forest one, but it is still based on the ecological principles.
